RE: Alton Towers 2012 & 2013

Swarmage for me tomorrow! The weather is going to be crap, but it was for my trip last year, yet everything was open. Hopefull it'll keep the queue's short.

That is what I am hoping, Thorpe seems to have not had so many things out of action lately, thankfully at mo weather looking good for Monday. I think swarm will be like air, looks good yet will be tame and or a different ride experience. Will of course eat my words monday if i am really impressed....

I thought it was quite cr** and they mislead you into thinking there is more to the attraction than there actually is....

No sarcasm. I experienced it in opening week and it was crap. Now, since it closed for changes, it's brilliant.

Nope. It closed two weeks ago for 5 days. They have tweaked the lighting and effects and have added what can be described as a mini scare maze with live actors after the second lifts. You would have experienced v1.5 - better than what me and Martyn experienced early on in the season but nowhere near what it's like now.

It's a much better experience and a fantastic little addition

So the actors appear in the second and final set of lifts then after the egg bit ??

The first set of lifts I am convinced are fake and do not take you anywhere..

^ Lol, doesn't take a genius to work that out! biggrin

That was the worst part for me, the lifts are just clearly SO fake.

They have made the lifts more realistic. They feel better. Not perfect, no - but good enough.

coolskin you don't really get what I'm saying here. They have built an extension to the attraction which works a bit like a scaremaze. When the second set of lifts open there are actors in boiler suits and bloodied lit up masks that enter the lifts and beckon you forward. You go through a pitch black mini-maze featuring more actors, strobe lights, air cannons and more. It is very jumpy and claustrophobic and ties the whole thing together giving it a good ending.

The narrative between the core and the ending needs to be tweaked, but the attraction *is* scary now and *is* complete.

Yeah I've heard its good. They just need to add some audio of the monster attacking the 'area', if you get I mean. With the actors 'fighting' it off.

I'm not sure that's the point of the new extension Martyn. It's meant to be some sort of Decontamination Zone - as after all, you have just been exposed to the monster(s) when in the core... So I think it's meant to be overrun by attacked workers or something?

But JUST being a decontamination zone isn't really scary though, is it?

SW7 has gone vertical :)

TowersStreet can also exclusively reveal that the hotels will feature some SW7 themed rooms next year:

Despite the fact that it's a Gerst, I am actually really excited for this!

It looks like it could be seriously insane... It's a real benchmark for Gerst as it's arguably their biggest project to date!

So it's been confirmed that it's opening in May now and it will be called "The Smiler". The name has got people talking - I personally love the name.

I dont. I hate "the" in ride names, there's no need for it.

And remember, it's a Gerstlauer, chances are we'll be crying on it, not smiling. It does looks fab though!

Dont get me wrong, I get how the name fits in with the theme, it just doesn't suit being a name for a ride.

RE: Alton Towers - The Smile-ugh

It'll grow Martyn. As for the ride, Saw was really smooth first season and then became terribly rough thereafter. I will ride it as much as possible this year to experience it at it's best.

Thats my plan too, get up there and go for it this year. Its looking the part, thats for sure.

My very first ride on Saw was last year, and I think it'll be my last.

Lol! Hopefully with a new train design this *might* be ok. I really do hope so, it looks mega and I'd hate to not want to ride it when visiting the Towers.

And the name wont grow on me. I'll get used to it, like I have Thirteen and Rita, but it/they will always be stupid ride names.

That's what I mean, you'll get used to it and it will just be a name. I remember when Nintendo first announced the name of he Wii. I thought "WTF" that's shocking - now I'm used to it, it's neither here nor there.

The Smiler works for me though.

Very overdue if you ask me.

I think this is the first time Merlin have ever repainted a coaster!

Alton Towers

Blivvy! :D
X-Sector revamp makes me so happy! The Smiler, Bliv in glorious black, Enterprise refurb, Submission refurb, pressure washed concrete and fixed Oblivion station (hopefully) FTW!

The park's getting plenty of other attention too with a few bits of painting touch ups here and there and a refurbished Hex too!
