Uninteresting fact: Don't know if they still use it, but the Carousel used to be operated by remote control, and lasted for 3 LONG minutes! (Not one of my faves to operate way back when....)
Any students know how to refurb Enigma? Contact PWH.

Are you sure it was second hand, Martyn? I was always of the opinion that it was purchased new, direct from a manufacturer in France, during the Winter of 2000, ready for the 2001 season.
I also seem to recall it was an expensive purchase at that too.

If you count that as 'new', then yes, I believe that was the last 'new' purchase for the park, alongside the Crazy Coaster ! Haha. It's awful when you think about it.
I guess a certain amount of weathering takes it's toll on a ride like the carousel. The lacquer must be well and truly worn away.
Though, saying that, I remember reading an article about how, at the end of each season, they stripped the ride down and overhauled it. Whether this was some sort of mechanical overhaul or something, I can't remember.
Anyone else a bit worried about how it may turn out? If all the horses were going to the same College, it may not have been so bad, but they're being spread out all over the region, so there could be some big contrasts in how they'll look!
This quote on the official website is not very well researched...
"The historic carousel, one of the park's earliest rides, has been modernised by local art students in an attempt to preserve its legacy."
I'm certain, as Leon said, that the ride was new when it arrived at the park and was just made to look like an old fashioned carousel. it's certainly not one of the parks earliest rides!
I got a bit excited seeing this posted on their Twitter page:
The horses have begun to gallop back to the carousel after being painted by the art students
But they pic they posted only shows this:
Am I the only one who thinks the Horses are going to look all funky and modern-ish (not in a bad way), and if they do, they may clash a bit with how old fashioned the main ride looks.
Another pic from Twitter (although it does appear to be the same as the one above)
I must say I do like the look of the horse on the right. Thats how I imagined most of them to look, all modern, with fancy, pretty 'tattoo' style markings.
